SHILLONG : North Shillong MLA Adelbert Nongrum has demanded a Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) inquiry into the alleged illegal collection of money by police personnel at Mawkhanu and Thangshalai check points, following the allegations brought to light through a sting operation by the Khasi Students’ Union (KSU).
Nongrum made the demand after meeting Deputy Chief Minister Prestone Tynsong on Monday, saying that an independent and transparent investigation is necessary to establish the truth and restore public confidence.
“I have placed before the Deputy Chief Minister my demand for a CBI inquiry. What is white is white and what is black is black. Let the law take its own course,” Nongrum told reporters.
The North Shillong MLA said the extent of the alleged irregularities remains unclear and questioned whether those involved could be from different levels of the police hierarchy.
“We don’t know who is involved — whether it is the top, middle or lower rung. Only a proper investigation can reveal that,” he said.
Nongrum also backed the KSU’s demand for the removal of the Superintendent of Police and Deputy Commissioner from their positions pending the investigation.
According to the MLA, keeping officials in positions of authority during the inquiry could raise questions over the independence of the investigation.
“Unless those in power are removed, the inquiry will not be smooth and the truth will not come out,” Nongrum said.
