SHILLONG : Intensifying their demand for the removal of Meghalaya Advocate General Amit Kumar, lawyers from the High Court Bar Association and Shillong Bar Association took to the streets of Shillong on Wednesday, October 7, 2026, alleging that they have lost confidence in him and accusing him of acting in an authoritarian manner.
The lawyers organised a rally as part of their ongoing campaign demanding that Amit Kumar be removed from the post of Advocate General of Meghalaya.
The rally began from the statue of Woh Kiang Nongbah opposite Civil Hospital Shillong. The lawyers then marched through Barik Point and Malki Point before proceeding towards Lachumiere and finally returning to the starting point.
Hundreds of lawyers participated in the rally and raised slogans demanding that Amit Kumar step down from the post. The protesters repeatedly chanted “Amir Kumar Go Back” and raised slogans against Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma, expressing their dissatisfaction with the government’s response to their demands.
The lawyers have been pressing the government to remove the Advocate General, stating that they no longer have confidence in him. They said they had already submitted a written representation to the government and had also taken to the streets in the previous month over the issue.
The two associations had earlier also observed a work abstention as part of their protest.
The latest rally marks the second occasion on which lawyers in Meghalaya have taken to the streets as part of their campaign seeking the removal of Advocate General Amit Kumar.
The protest comes amid continuing tensions between sections of the legal fraternity and the state government over the appointment and continuation of the Advocate General.
