SHILLONG : Deputy Chief Minister in-charge of Home (Police) Prestone Tynsong has urged the opposition Voice of the People Party (VPP) to meet him personally to seek clarification over the appointment of a regular Director General of Police (DGP), instead of raising the matter through the media.

His statement came after the VPP sought an explanation from the state government over the delay in appointing a regular DGP, particularly after the Union Public Service Commission (UPSC) reportedly issued a second reminder regarding the process.

Questioning the allegation of delay, Tynsong asked, “What delay? When is this present incumbent DGP retiring?”

The current DGP, Idashisha Nongrang, is scheduled to retire in November this year.

Responding to the issue of the UPSC’s second reminder, Tynsong maintained that the state government was following the prescribed procedures in the appointment process.

“Whatever the UPSC or the Ministry of Home Affairs requires, we are complying with all the procedures. So, in case they want to know more, I would like to request them to come and meet me personally,” he said.

The Deputy Chief Minister further said that official matters of this nature should be discussed directly with the concerned authorities rather than being raised through press statements.

“If they want clarification, they do not necessarily have to go to the press like this. Let them come and sit across the table, and I will explain the actualities to them,” Tynsong added.

The appointment of a regular DGP has become a point of contention after the VPP questioned the government’s handling of the process following the UPSC’s second reminder.
