Every year on the 8th of September, International Literacy Day is observed to create awareness and concern for literacy problems that exist within our own local communities as well as globally.
The Day is celebrated to stress on the importance of literacy as a matter of dignity and basic human rights. Literacy is indeed a blessing. It is not just about reading and writing but a unique and powerful tool to eradicate poverty and a strong means for social and human progress. This year International Literacy Day 2021 is observed mainly focusing on teaching and learning in the COVID-19 crisis.
Thus SPARK too observed the Day this year stressing basically on the roles of individuals, parents and communities to take charge and use their literacy to encourage and assist those who are facing difficulties on how to read and write especially at this critical situation due to COVID 19.
Following the concept “If you Educate a Women, You Educate the Nation, SPARK took the initiatives to enroll the mothers of the children into its educational centers with a unique idea of their children playing the crucial role of an educator to educate these mothers.
The children handed over educational materials to their mothers and brought them back to education making this Literacy Day special by teaching them to read and write holding the hands of their mother making a beginning to eradicate illiteracy.
It was indeed very heartwarming to witness the enthusiasm, excitement and interest of both children and mothers towards a new beginning to lives. Many of the mothers were in tears of joy seeing their children’s efforts towards educating their mothers thereby empowering them with the strong tool of education.
SPARK has been running different centres for Out of School children thereby bringing them back to education. And today, these children are empowered enough to step towards educating their mothers and changing their lives too.
It was indeed a very important and fulfilling day to witness. We most humbly urge all concerned to play role as a responsible citizen of the country and take charge of educating the next person so that we can all together fight against illiteracy and bring about positives changes in the lives of all and Nation as a whole.
