Samagra Shiksha Abhiyan, SEMAM, Department of School Education & Literacy (DSEL), Directorate of Educational Research and Training (DERT), Government of Meghalaya in collaboration with Meghalaya Early Childhood Development Mission, and Centre for Research in Schemes and Policies (CRISP) organised a three-day workshop from 26th to 28th September 2023 on building Structured Pedagogy for Foundational Literacy and Numeracy (FLN) Skills.
The event was held at DERT Annex, Malki, Shillong and inaugurated by Shri Rakkam Sangma, the Hon’ble Minister for Education, Government of Meghalaya, in the presence of Deputy CEO of ECD Mission and Director, Social Welfare Department Smt C D Lyngwa, Joint Director, DERT Shri P B Lartang, Principal DERT Annexe and Co-Founder of CRISP Ms Sandhya Rani Kanneganti, IPoS (Retrd), and CRISP State team members leading by Dr Minnette Ireen Passah. The participants consisted of FLN Team from Samagra and DERT, Content Writers from 7 DIETs, and 32 selected teachers from all districts across the State.
The workshop sessions were anchored by esteemed organisations like Central Square Foundation, Pratham Education Foundation, Azim Premji University, Madhi Foundation, Room to Read, and prominent educationists like Dr Binay Pattanayak, Consultant, World Bank & UNICEF.
During the Three (3) day workshop the participants got an understanding of Foundational Stage Education (Early Childhood Education and grades 1,2 and 3) envisaged under the National Education Policy 2020 and National Curriculum Framework 2022. They learnt about various aspects of FLN, features and impact of structured lesson plans in improving student learning outcomes, best pedagogical practices in literacy, numeracy and in multilingual contexts. They created templates and sample lesson plans for the subjects of Mathematics, English, Khasi, and Garo and presented them to Smt R.S.Manner Director, DERT. The participants expressed excitement about their new learnings and how they will implement it in their classrooms.
The Education Department, Government of Meghalaya is focusing on improving the learning outcomes of the children. This workshop is aimed at equipping the teachers with appropriate teaching-learning material in order to improve the quality of teaching in the classrooms. As follow-up to the workshop, DERT and Samagra Shiksha FLN teams, content writers, and expert teachers will develop structured lesson plans for Foundational Stage Education including. These lesson plans will be used in the teacher training modules and will be made available as teacher resources guides from the next academic year.
