In a recent incident that took place in previous months at Rwiang village in West Khasi Hills district, tension arose between the residents of Rwiang and a steel manufacturing company. This led the villagers to shut down the company’s operations during that time.

On the 3rd of July 2025, the village leaders of Rwiang, led by Sordar Wiljoy Iawphniaw, along with representatives from the company and senior officers from the Meghalaya Pollution Control Board, held a meeting to deliberate on the past incident.

Speaking to the media, the village headman stated that if the company commits to respecting the Memorandum of Understanding (MoU)—which includes not polluting the water sources, the air the villagers breathe, and causing no harm to the environment—the village will consider allowing the company to resume its operations.
