The Central Silk Board (CSB), Ministry of Textiles, Govt. of India flagship programme “Mera Resham Mera Abhiman” (MRMA) is being implemented with full enthusiasm and vigour across Ri-Bhoi district, Meghalaya. This 100-day sericulture technology transfer campaign, which began in July 2025, is aimed at strengthening the technical skills of sericulture farmers and promoting sustainable livelihood opportunities. As part of the MRMA campaign, a demonstration programme on improved Muga and Eri silkworm rearing techniques was organised on 13.08.2025 at the State Sericulture Farm, Marngar, Ri-Bhoi district. The event was jointly organised by the Central Silk Board, Muga Eri Silkworm Seed Organization (MESSO), P-3 Unit, Nongpoh, in collaboration with the District Sericulture Office, Ri-Bhoi. Despite continuous rainfall, the programme witnessed an impressive participation of 120 farmers from Marngar and Mawsyntai circles, reflecting the strong interest of local farmers in adopting scientific sericulture practices. The programme was chaired by Abhishek Singh, Scientist-C, CSB-MESSO, Nongpoh, who highlighted the region unique potential for sustainable sericulture. He urged farmers to adopt scientific methods in Muga and Eri rearing to increase yield and profitability, stating, our goal is to transform sericulture farming from a cultural practice into a viable and rewarding livelihood. Mr. L. Rympaei, Sericulture Inspector, District Sericulture Office, Ri-Bhoi, stressed the socio-economic benefits of sericulture farming, he explained improved Eri rearing techniques and encouraged the farmers to conduct more rearings in a year to enhance production and income levels. Smt. Deepanjali Barka (SD, Mawsyntai Circle) and Smt. Teimolang Lamre (SD, Marngar Circle) encouraged farmers to actively participate in training, demonstrations, and field visits under the MRMA campaign. Shri Surujeet Kaushik, Senior Field Assistant, MESSO, Nongpoh, proposed the vote of thanks, appreciating the collaborative efforts of the Central Silk Board and the State Sericulture Office. To make the training accessible and locally relevant, a technology booklet titled “Safeguarding Muga: A Guide to Disease Prevention and Control” was released and distributed among the participants. The booklet provides easy-to-follow guidelines and best practices for Muga silkworm disease management, enabling farmers to apply scientific methods independently and effectively. This initiative not only strengthened the technical capacity of Muga and Eri farmers but also instilled confidence and fostered unity among the rural sericulture community. The strong turnout, despite adverse weather conditions, demonstrates the enthusiasm and readiness of farmers in Ri-Bhoi to embrace modern technologies. The CSB’s focused interventions are expected to significantly boost raw silk production in Meghalaya, serving as a model for sericulture development in other parts of the country.
