Shillong: Shri Limison D. Sangma, Hon’ble MLA from Raksamgre Assembly Constituency, filed his nomination today for the post of Deputy Speaker of the Meghalaya Legislative Assembly.

The election was necessitated following the resignation of Shri Timothy D. Shira earlier this week.

Confirming the development, Commissioner and Secretary of the Meghalaya Legislative Assembly, Shri Andrew Simons, informed that Shri Limison D. Sangma is the only candidate to have filed his nomination. His candidature was proposed by Cabinet Minister and Williamnagar MLA, Shri Marcuise N. Marak, and Cabinet Minister and seconded by Phulbari MLA, Shri Abu Taher Mondal.

Shri Simons further stated that September 10 was the last date for filing nominations, while September 11 has been fixed as the last date for withdrawal. The election is scheduled for Friday, September 12, 2025. He added that the Opposition has not filed any nomination for the post.

Addressing the possibility of an election, Shri Simons said that since there is no other candidate in the fray, Shri Limison D. Sangma stands elected unanimously. The formal announcement will be made in the House by the Hon’ble Speaker, Shri Thomas A. Sangma, on Friday.

Briefing the press, the Hon’ble Speaker, Shri Thomas A. Sangma, also clarified:

“As per the schedule, tomorrow is the last day for withdrawal. In case any withdrawal takes place, we will need to revisit the announcement and reflect it in the schedule again. However, so far, we have received only one proposal and one nomination.”
