The Meghalaya Editors and Publishers Association (MEPA) expresses its profound grief at the passing of Dr. D. D. Lapang, one of the most distinguished political leaders of the State and the Founding President of the Association.

Before assuming the role of MEPA’s first President, Dr. Lapang made a lasting contribution to the media fraternity as the Founding Publisher of U Peitngor, a Khasi newspaper that reflected his commitment to nurturing a vibrant press in the State. His vision for strengthening journalism also extended to providing the Shillong Press Club with a dedicated premises in 1992, during his tenure as Chief Minister, enabling journalists to have a regular space for interaction and professional growth.

In an emergent meeting held to mourn his passing, MEPA members paid rich tribute to Dr. Lapang, recalling his invaluable role as a mentor and guide to the media fraternity. His statesmanship, humility, and vision for human development left a lasting impact on society, earning him the unique distinction of serving as Chief Minister of Meghalaya on four occasions across different tenures.

While conveying heartfelt condolences to the bereaved family, MEPA acknowledged with deep gratitude Dr. Lapang’s enduring support and contributions to both the media and the wider community.

In a message of condolence, MEPA President R. Monarch Shabong, on behalf of all members, expressed profound sorrow at the demise of Dr. Lapang and prayed for eternal peace to the departed soul.
