In a major breakthrough, Assam Police have arrested five individuals involved in a daring robbery at the residence and office of a wealthy stone trader, Deepak Hazarika, at 13th Mile, Jorabat. The arrests were made late last night following extensive raids in Nongpoh, Byrnihat and 12th Mile.
The incident took place in the early hours of August 24, around 2 AM, when a group of masked assailants stormed into Hazarika’s office and house. Armed with pistols, they looted gold ornaments and cash worth several lakhs of rupees. The attackers also assaulted security personnel during the robbery.
Police confirmed that those arrested include three from Ri-Bhoi district – Maxxpil K. Marak and Tronit Sangma of Rajabagan, Byrnihat, along with Bojoy Thangkhiew of Pahamsyiem village. The other two accused are from Assam – Nur Mohammad alias Ali of Barpeta and Hilbert Sangma of Tandu, Sonapur.
During the operation, police recovered:
One SBL gun, One machete, Two daggers, A mask, Two stolen mobile phones, Gold ornaments, and Cash amounting to ₹2,000.
Authorities also seized two vehicles used in the crime – a Datsun Redi-Go (ML10B7842) and a Tata Tigor (ML10B6113).
Police said further investigation is underway to trace other possible links and recover more stolen property.
