Shillong: Four people, including three minors, were killed and three others injured when a mini dumper truck overturned after hitting a group of pedestrians at Thadrang village under Mawlasnai Outpost in Meghalaya’s Ri-Bhoi district on Friday night.
According to Ri-Bhoi Superintendent of Police Vivekananda Singh, the truck (registration number ML05-AC-8447) was travelling from Jowai towards Bhoirymbong when it lost control and rammed into five persons. Three of them — all teenagers — died on the spot, while another succumbed to her injuries on Saturday morning.
The deceased have been identified as Phibanpyntngen Rynjah (13), Lashimti Nongrum (13), Ridahunlang Nongrum (13), and Theresa Nongrum (19), all residents of Thadrang Madan Lyngbah village.
An 11-year-old girl, Iupharisa Nongrum, sustained serious injuries and is undergoing treatment at a higher medical centre after being shifted from Bhoirymbong CHC. The driver, Ferlindes Rymbai (34) of Laitkor, and his helper, Dwayne Dkhar (31) of Khliehtyrshi, were also seriously hurt when the vehicle capsized following the impact.
All the injured were referred to higher medical facilities for treatment. The three bodies were handed over to their families after post-mortem examination, police said.
The vehicle has been seized, and a case has been registered. “Police will file appropriate charges under relevant sections of the law, pending medical reports of the injured, including the driver and helper,” SP Singh said.
