The Hon’ble Speaker of the Meghalaya Legislative Assembly, Shri Thomas A. Sangma, chaired a review meeting on Wednesday to assess the progress of the ongoing construction of the new Assembly building.

Following the review, the Hon’ble Speaker informed that the new Assembly building is expected to be completed by June 2026. He stated that the initial target for completion was March 2025; however, the vendors entrusted with the interior works have sought an extension of approximately six months to complete the interiors, which include the main hall, reception area, and lobby.

To ensure timely progress, the Hon’ble Speaker announced that monthly review meetings will be held, with the next meeting scheduled for December 8, 2025. He also expressed optimism that the Autumn Session of 2026 will be conducted in the new Assembly building.

The Hon’ble Speaker stated that the project involves several crucial components such as audio-visual systems, acoustics, and security installations, all of which require meticulous planning and coordination. He further assured that the delay in completion will not result in any financial implications.

Expressing satisfaction with the redesigned dome, the Hon’ble Speaker informed that the new design has been engineered to evenly distribute the roof’s weight and has been vetted by IIT Guwahati and IIT Roorkee.

He further added that detailed DPRs are being prepared for the second phase of the project, which will include staff quarters and other essential facilities, and that the concerned Central Ministries have been approached for necessary approvals.

The review meeting was attended by Hon’ble Deputy Chief Minister, Shri Prestone Tynsong, Hon’ble Minister In-charge Parliamentary Affairs, Shri Cyril V. Deingdoh, Commissioner and Secretary, Parliamentary Affairs Department, Government of Meghalaya, and Shri Andrew Simons, Commissioner and Secretary, Meghalaya Legislative Assembly, along with other senior officials.
