Women of Umkra village on Saturday managed to intercept a vehicle transporting illicit liquor into Umkra village in Ri-Bhoi District. During the inspection, the women seized as many as 10 jars of illicit liquor. Since only women were present at the spot, they immediately informed the VDP (Village Defence Party) and the neighbouring villages, including Nongsangu and Shyntor Bulia.
During the checking of the vehicle bearing registration number ML 10 B 9410, driven by Bah Roibok Manih, which was carrying liquor belonging to Bah Phias Laloo, it was found that the vehicle was transporting 10 jars of illicit liquor. The matter was soon reported to the Synjuk of Rangbah Shnong of Marngar, Umsaw Nongbri, and Umkra. Under the leadership of the president, Bah Mission Tron, the Synjuk immediately visited the location and apprehended the individuals involved in the illegal liquor trade.
They were produced today before the traditional court of Umkra village, as this is not the first time such illegal activity has been detected in the area.
The day also witnessed the presence of Synjuk leaders including Bah B. Timung (Adviser), Bah Mission Tron (President), Bah Phaintis Syngkli (Secretary) and others, along with women of the village, VDP members, and village elders.
After the hearing, the village authorities, in the presence of the Synjuk leaders, imposed fines on both the owner of the liquor and the driver of the vehicle who attempted to deliver it to the village. They were also issued a stern warning not to repeat such activities in the future.
Furthermore, the seized liquor was burned on the same day to demonstrate the commitment of the villages in the area to eradicate illegal activities, particularly the sale and transport of illicit liquor and other harmful practices.
