In line with the Prime Minister’s vision of Ek Bharat Shreshtha Bharat, Raj Bhavan Shillong today celebrated the Statehood Day of Assam and Nagaland at the Durbar Hall, Raj Bhavan. The event highlighted the cultural, historical and socio-economic contributions of the two States, reaffirming the spirit of unity and national integration.

Delivering his address, the Governor of Meghalaya, Shri C.H. Vijayshankar, said that the occasion was “not merely a date on the calendar but a reminder of the journey of sacrifice, peace, progress and unity of the States.”

Reflecting on Assam’s glorious legacy, the Governor said, “Assam, one of India’s most culturally and historically rich States, celebrates today a legacy spanning centuries. Known as the gateway to the Northeast, Assam has contributed immensely to India-whether through tea, art, literature, cinema or its enduring traditions. The teachings of Srimanta Sankardev, the valour of Lachit Borphukan, the vibrance of Bihu and its exemplary unity in diversity continue to inspire generations.”

Speaking on Assam’s importance to India’s economic landscape, he added that the State’s “economic strength and regional connectivity make it a pillar of development in the Northeast.

The Governor remarked on Nagaland’s progress, stating, “In recent years, Nagaland has made commendable advancements in entrepreneurship, music, sports, tourism and grassroots development. These achievements are a testament to the spirit and determination of the Naga people.”

Reaffirming the national vision, the Governor stated, “As we commemorate the Statehood Day, we reaffirm our collective resolve towards Viksit Bharat 2047 under the leadership of Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi. His vision of Ek Bharat Shrestha Bharat reminds us that unity is India’s greatest strength.” He further extended his warm greetings to the people of Assam and Nagaland.

In his welcome address, Shri H.C. Chaudhary, IFS, Principal Secretary to the Governor, emphasised the significance of celebrating the Statehood Day of two culturally vibrant States that play a vital role in shaping the identity of the Northeast. He said, “These states have enlisted India through their traditions, their contribution to the economy and their commitment to peace and progress in the northeast.”

A special video message from the Governor of Assam and Nagaland was screened, followed by a documentary showcasing the rich history and cultural roots of both States. The cultural segment curated by ICCR featured Assamese group songs, an Assamese group dance paying homage to Bhupen Hazarika, and traditional Naga folk songs were performed.

The programme was attended by senior officials of Raj Bhavan, representatives of Assam and Nagaland communities in Shillong, cultural troupes, and invited dignitaries.
