The Hill State People’s Democratic Party (HSPDP) Youth Wing, West Khasi Hills District, has submitted a memorandum to the Minister in-charge of Arts and Culture, Sanbor Shullai, seeking the upgradation of the District Library at Nongstoin into a District Multi-Convention Centre.
In the memorandum, the youth wing highlighted the urgent need for a modern, multipurpose convention and community centre to meet the growing cultural, educational, and social requirements of the people of West Khasi Hills.
“The District Library building, though established with a noble intent, has in recent years seen minimal utilization due to limited facilities and infrastructural constraints,” the memorandum stated.
According to the HSPDP Youth Wing, the proposed upgrade would transform the existing library into a vibrant hub for promoting arts, culture, youth engagement, education, and social development across the district. The centre would also serve as a dedicated study space for unemployed youth preparing for various competitive examinations.
“We earnestly request your kind intervention and necessary action to upgrade the present District Library into a District Multi-Convention Centre with modern facilities,” the organization stated.
The youth wing further urged the Minister to allocate the required funds and provide technical support through the Department of Arts and Culture. It also requested that the project be included in the State’s upcoming cultural and infrastructure development plan for the financial year 2025–26.
“We remain hopeful that under your able leadership, this long-felt aspiration of the people of West Khasi Hills will be given due consideration,” the memorandum concluded.
