The opposition Voice of the People Party (VPP) has warned of resuming its agitational programme if the Meghalaya government fails to immediately release the report of the expert committee reviewing the state’s job reservation policy.
In an open statement addressed to Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma on Thursday, VPP President and Nongkrem MLA Ardent Basaiawmoit expressed strong concern over the continued delay in making the report public, despite six months having passed since its submission.
“The expert committee submitted its report in June, but till today the state government seems unwilling to make it public despite repeated reminders from our party,” Basaiawmoit stated.
He said the prolonged silence of the government has raised serious questions regarding transparency and fairness in the policy review process.
Warning of intensified action, Basaiawmoit asserted that the VPP would be compelled to resume its agitation if the government fails to announce and release the report immediately.
“Therefore, in this connection, the party would be compelled to resume its agitations if the government fails to announce the report of the expert committee immediately,” he added.
The expert committee, headed by former Chief Justice of the Delhi High Court, Justice (Retd) Mool Chand Garg, was constituted in September 2023 to review Meghalaya’s job reservation policy formulated in 1972. The committee submitted its findings to the state government in June 2025.
However, the delay in releasing the report has sparked concerns among various stakeholders over the government’s commitment to addressing long-standing issues related to employment reservation in the state.
Earlier, Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma had stated that the report would be made public after cabinet approval, but no specific timeline has been announced so far.
