Deputy Chief Minister Sniawbhalang Dhar has reiterated the Meghalaya government’s zero-tolerance policy towards militant activities, asserting that threats from the banned Hynniewtrep National Liberation Council (HNLC) will not be accepted under any circumstances.
Condemning the recent IED attack at the Dhar Construction Company campus in Shymplong village, East Jaintia Hills district, Dhar praised the police for their swift action in apprehending suspects linked to the incident.
“We from the government will not tolerate such threats, especially when the HNLC is a banned organisation. Fortunately, the police have acted promptly and arrested some individuals. We believe the police will take action strictly as per the law,” Dhar told reporters.
The Deputy Chief Minister also dismissed the HNLC’s claims related to extortion, describing them as contradictory and baseless.
“You have seen they are contradicting themselves. A couple of months ago they claimed that Sniawbhalang Dhar had paid extortion, and now they are saying he is not paying. These allegations are completely unfounded,” he said.
Reaffirming the government’s commitment to maintaining law and order, Dhar urged citizens—particularly the youth—not to succumb to fear.
“I want to clearly convey to the people of the state that we will not bow down to any militant outfit. We are firmly against terrorism and anti-social elements. The government stands with the people, and there is no need to be afraid,” he stated.
Despite the strong stance against militancy, Dhar said the government remains open to dialogue in the interest of lasting peace.
“The door is still open for peace talks with the HNLC. They had earlier come forward for discussions at the level of the Home Minister, and even today the door remains open. Our priority is peace and tranquility in Meghalaya,” he added.
Concluding his remarks, Dhar emphasized unity, development, and progress, stressing that the government will not allow any forces to derail the state’s growth.
“We want to strengthen the state. Our focus is development, not negativity. Any attempt to disturb peace will be dealt with firmly,” he said.
