Meghalaya : The Meghalaya government has intensified its crackdown on illegal migration, with 658 Bangladeshi nationals detected and prosecuted and 194 deported since 2021, Deputy Chief Minister Prestone Tynsong informed the Assembly on Tuesday.
Responding to a call attention notice moved by Heaving Stone Kharpran, Tynsong said the state has implemented a “comprehensive and multi-layered anti-infiltration mechanism” combining border infrastructure, district squads, and inter-departmental coordination.
Border Surveillance Strengthened
Authorities have established 18 check posts, gates, and a land customs station at sensitive stretches along inter-state routes and the India–Bangladesh border.
District-level squads regularly conduct surprise NAKA checks and joint patrols with Labour Department officials, Village Defence Parties, and local bodies.
Task Forces & Enforcement
The state has formed 11 District Task Forces to coordinate detection and deportation efforts, alongside a state-level monitoring committee.
“From 2021 till 03.02.2026, a total of 658 Bangladeshi nationals were detected and prosecuted under relevant legal provisions,” Tynsong stated.
He added that 194 individuals were deported after completing legal formalities and obtaining travel permits from the Bangladesh Embassy.
Laws & Security Measures
Officials are enforcing:
Meghalaya Resident Safety and Security Act, 2016 (in parts of East Khasi Hills)
Immigration and Foreigners Act, 2025
Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita
Ministry of Home Affairs guidelines
Tynsong appealed to citizens and organisations to cooperate with verification drives, stressing that the objective is to protect genuine Indian citizens while taking firm action against illegal infiltration.
