SHILLONG : Ardent Miller Basaiawmoit has said that the Voice of the People Party (VPP) will not rush into the upcoming elections to the Garo Hills Autonomous District Council (GHADC), emphasizing that anyone joining the party must fully embrace its ideology and principles.
Responding to queries on whether the party would field candidates in the GHADC elections scheduled for April 10, Basaiawmoit said numerous requests had been received urging the party to contest.
“To be honest with you, a lot of requests have come to us to field candidates. During my recent visit, I made it clear that as of now we are not going to rush. We are firm in our approach that whoever joins VPP must understand the basic principles, ideology and philosophy,” he said.
He stressed that VPP is more than just an electoral platform, describing it as a movement aimed at transforming public mindset and governance practices.
“Unless you fully subscribe to what we believe, we are not going to… because VPP is not only a political party to contest elections; it is a movement, a kind of revolution where we want to change the mindset of the people from what we are practicing now to something entirely different,” he added.
Basaiawmoit acknowledged that supporters have urged reconsideration and requested the party to contest at least a few constituencies in Garo Hills, but maintained that the party leadership has decided not to rush into electoral participation for now.
