SHILLONG, JAN 21: Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma said that while the State has witnessed significant growth over the past seven to eight years—recording an average growth rate of around 10% over the last three years—economic figures alone do not define success.
Speaking at the 54th Meghalaya Statehood Day celebration, held for the first time in Baghmara, South Garo Hills, Sangma emphasized that real development is measured by how it impacts the lives of people rather than foundation stones or MoUs.
Deputy Chief Minister Prestone Tynsong and Education Minister Lahkmen Rymbui attended the official programme, which began with the rendition of the State Anthem by the Khmih Choir, Shillong, followed by cultural performances showcasing the rich heritage of Meghalaya’s tribes.
Sangma highlighted the divine blessings that granted the people of Meghalaya their own land, State, and identity. He paid tribute to the leaders who spearheaded the statehood movement through non-violent struggle and unity across tribes and communities.
Expressing concern over present-day divisions, particularly on social media, he urged citizens to rise above negativity and hatred and remember the values of unity and cooperation that shaped the State.
Speaking on the CM-Connect programme, Sangma stressed that mindset is critical: “If we decide in advance that something cannot be done, then we have already failed.” He also highlighted the importance of district-level planning, with clear targets and visions, as essential for meaningful growth.
The Chief Minister described the decision to celebrate Meghalaya Day in South Garo Hills as symbolic, noting it is the home of late Captain Williamson A. Sangma, the State’s first Chief Minister. He also announced the clearance of Rs. 140 crore for the second phase of the Baghmara water supply project and assured attention to road connectivity and upgrading Baghmara Civil Hospital with proper facilities, equipment, and manpower.
Stressing unity, Sangma said, “The destinies of the people of Meghalaya are inseparable and divinely ordained,” recalling the State’s past ranking at the bottom of development indices and framing it as an opportunity to transform sectors like education, infrastructure, and governance.
He also shared a personal letter from Prime Minister Narendra Modi, conveying greetings on Meghalaya Day, fondly recalling late P.A. Sangma and his contributions.
Deputy CM Prestone Tynsong called the celebration historic, highlighting development efforts in South Garo Hills and improved road connectivity between Shillong and Baghmara. Education Minister Lahkmen Rymbui emphasized the State’s progressive, people-centric governance under the MDA governments, noting initiatives to promote unity through language learning and skill development.
Chief Secretary Dr. Shakil P. Ahammed underscored balanced development, sustainable resource management, and accountability, referencing Vision 2032 and achievements across infrastructure, education, agriculture, power reforms, and entrepreneurship programs like CM Elevate and YES Meghalaya.
The celebration also included the announcement of Meghalaya Day Awards, Governor’s Police Medals, and the Meghalaya Day Excellence Awards, as well as a video titled Rise Meghalaya, showcasing the State’s development journey. Cultural performances of traditional Khasi and Garo dances enriched the programme, which concluded with a vote of thanks by B.S. Sohliya and the National Anthem.
