Shillong: A stone-pelting incident disrupted the Khasi Students’ Union (KSU) Khasi National Awakening Day rally at Laban in Shillong on Saturday, creating panic among residents and raising concerns over law and order.According to eyewitnesses, a stone was allegedly thrown from one of the nearby buildings, targeting participants of the rally. In reaction, some KSU activists reportedly picked up the same stone and hurled it back towards the direction it came from.A local resident confirmed the sequence of events, stating that the stone was first thrown from a building, after which some activists responded by throwing it back.Women from the locality strongly condemned the act, warning that such provocation could have escalated tensions and led to serious law-and-order issues. They stated that the rally was proceeding peacefully when the sudden incident occurred, and called for strict action against those responsible.The situation caused panic among people in the area. Reports also indicated that in other parts of Laban, window panes of several houses were damaged during the rally, which was conducted under tight security arrangements.Following the incident, police have initiated an investigation and are closely monitoring the situation.Meanwhile, the rally observed a complete shutdown in the area, with shops and business establishments remaining closed throughout the day.
