SHILLONG : The Voice of the People Party (VPP) on Friday strongly opposed any move to develop Mawjymbuin Cave in Mawsynram under central tourism schemes in a way that could project it as a religious or pilgrimage site.
VPP spokesperson Dr AW Rani stated that the party has serious concerns over the alleged plan to develop the cave under schemes such as PRASHAD and Swadesh Darshan 2.0, with indications that the site may be promoted along religious lines.
He maintained that Mawjymbuin Cave is a natural tourist destination and should remain strictly as such, without any religious or cultural reinterpretation. According to him, any attempt to associate or develop the cave as a religious site is unacceptable and could create unnecessary controversy.
Rani also pointed out that the issue of linking Mawjymbuin Cave with religious sentiments has already been the subject of public debate and legal scrutiny in the past. He said such history makes it even more important that the site is not turned into a pilgrimage destination under any circumstances.
The VPP appealed to all concerned authorities and stakeholders to act with restraint and responsibility, emphasizing the need to respect public sentiments and avoid actions that could lead to division or unrest.
Reiterating the party’s stand, Rani said that Mawjymbuin Cave must remain a tourist destination and should not be linked to any religion or faith in any form.
