SHILLONG : Following the vacancy of the Shillong Lok Sabha seat in February, Meghalaya Chief Electoral Officer (CEO) Dr. BDR Tiwari confirmed on Tuesday that the byelection will be conducted within the mandatory six-month window. He further stated that the state’s election machinery is fully equipped and ready for the upcoming polls.
“As per the mandate, the byelection is supposed to happen within six months of the demise of the sitting late MP of Shillong parliamentary constituency,” Tiwari stated. “We are fully prepared to conduct the byelection.”
Background on the Vacancy
The Shillong parliamentary seat fell vacant following the untimely demise of VPP MP Dr. Ricky AJ Syngkon on February 19, 2026. Under the Representation of the People Act, the Election Commission is required to fill the vacancy within six months of its occurrence.
Political Contenders Enter the Fray
The electoral battle for Shillong is already intensifying as major parties announce their candidates:
- National People’s Party (NPP): The ruling party has nominated KAS President Dr. DRL Nonglait.
- Voice of the People Party (VPP): The opposition has named Prof. Batskhem Myrboh as its candidate to retain the seat.
Rajya Sabha Election Update
Beyond the Lok Sabha bypoll, Dr. Tiwari addressed the upcoming Rajya Sabha election from Meghalaya. He indicated that the process would likely conclude before the current term expires.
“As per the schedule given, very soon before the seat is getting vacant, I hope somewhere in the month of June,” the CEO remarked regarding the Rajya Sabha timeline.
