Shillong : Langsning FC sealed the final remaining berth in the Super 8 stage of the Meghalaya State League 2026 after producing a dominant 5-0 victory over Lumphyrnai Sohphoh FC at the SSA Stadium in Shillong on Tuesday evening.
Star striker Nelson Rymbai gave Langsning the perfect start by opening the scoring in just the 4th minute, taking his tally to 15 goals this season and strengthening his position as one of the league’s top scorers.
Denelson Pyngrope doubled the lead in the 10th minute before Samuel Phawa stole the spotlight with a sensational first-half hat-trick, finding the net in the 25th, 45th and 45+1 minutes to complete the rout before halftime.
Despite the heavy defeat, Lumphyrnai Sohphoh FC displayed impressive fighting spirit throughout the match and repeatedly tested Langsning goalkeeper Rajat Paul Lyngdoh in front of their travelling supporters.
The fixture was originally scheduled to be played in Mairang on Monday, but persistent rainfall and poor ground conditions forced organisers to shift the encounter to Shillong.
Langsning entered the knockout phase as toppers of Group F, while Lumphyrnai Sohphoh qualified as runners-up from Group E.
With the completion of the qualification round, the Super 8 groups for the Meghalaya State League have now been confirmed. Group A has already been dubbed the “group of death” as it features former champions and strong title contenders including Mawlai SC, Shillong Lajong FC, Rangdajied United FC and Nongkseh SSCC.
Group B comprises Nangkiew Irat SC, Rymbai Shkenshynriah SC, Langsning FC and Maram FC.
The teams will face each other twice in a round-robin format, with the top two sides from each group advancing to the semifinals. All Super 8 matches will be played in Shillong.
This marks the first time the Meghalaya State League is adopting the Super 8 league format, a move expected to give football fans more opportunities to witness high-quality matches live at the stadium.
The opening Super 8 fixtures will be played on Wednesday at the SSA Stadium. Nongkseh SSCC will take on Mawlai SC at 2 PM, while old rivals Shillong Lajong FC and Rangdajied United FC will clash at 6 PM in what promises to be a thrilling encounter.
