Shillong : A vibrant Musical Evening was organised at the State Convention Hall in Shillong on Saturday to celebrate 90 years of Akashvani’s service as one of India’s most trusted public broadcasters.
The programme was jointly organised by Akashvani Shillong and Akashvani North Eastern Services (NES) Shillong and featured colourful performances by some of Meghalaya’s leading musicians and cultural groups.
The evening showcased Khasi folk songs by Balahpynhun Mawlong and party, Garo folk songs by the Ahowee Folk Band, and Jaintia folk performances by the Seinraij Art & Culture Group. Popular singer Shirley Passah entertained the audience with western songs, while Ribhakupar Shadap performed Hindi songs during the celebration.
Addressing the gathering as the chief guest, Principal Secretary to the Government of Meghalaya, Shri Frederick Roy Kharkongor, described the occasion as a major milestone for Akashvani. He said the broadcaster continues to enjoy the trust of the people because of its reliable and credible news coverage.
He also highlighted the importance of Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s Mann Ki Baat programme, saying it directly connects citizens with national issues while also giving visibility to Meghalaya on several occasions.
Kharkongor further credited Akashvani and Doordarshan for nurturing young talents and providing musicians and artists a platform to reach audiences across the state and the country.
Assistant Director (Engineering), Akashvani Shillong, Shri Antony War welcomed the gathering while Assistant Director (Programme), Akashvani NES Shillong, Smt Evelyn Khongsit delivered the vote of thanks.
Among those present during the programme were Zonal Director of the Indian Council of Cultural Relations (Northeast Zone), Dr Munish Singh, Shri S.K Deohare, DDG Admin, ADG Office Admin and Broadcast Operations, North East Zone, along with several distinguished guests and music lovers.
