SHILLONG : In a shocking incident that has raised concern among parents in Meghalaya, an 8-year-old girl narrowly escaped an alleged kidnapping and human trafficking attempt in Ri-Bhoi district. Police have arrested the accused and investigation is currently underway.

According to reports, the incident took place on the evening of May 27 in a village under Nongpoh Police Station in Ri-Bhoi district.

Sources said the accused, who is reportedly related to the minor, allegedly forced the child onto a motorcycle and took her to another location.

At the spot, three other men were allegedly waiting with two motorcycles. The child reportedly overheard the men discussing plans to put her inside a sack and sell her.

Showing remarkable courage, the young girl managed to escape while the suspects were preparing the sack. She screamed for help and ran from the spot.

Her cries were heard by labourers working nearby on a pipe installation project. The workers immediately rushed to rescue the child and later handed her over to village authorities before informing her family members.

Following the incident, the family lodged an FIR at Nongpoh Women Police Station.

Acting swiftly, police launched an investigation and managed to arrest the accused. Further investigation into the case is still in progress.
