Shillong : The Khasi Students’ Union (KSU) Delhi Unit has rescued two young women from Barato, Meghalaya, who were allegedly lured to Delhi with false promises of employment and later pressured to engage in prostitution.
According to a statement issued by the KSU Delhi Unit, the two women reached out to the organisation on May 31 seeking urgent help after finding themselves in a distressing situation.
The women alleged that they had travelled to Delhi after being assured that jobs would be arranged for them in a hotel. However, upon their arrival, they were reportedly pressured to engage in prostitution instead.
When the women refused, the person who had brought them to Delhi allegedly demanded repayment of the travel expenses incurred on their behalf and confiscated their mobile phones. The victims further claimed that they were not allowed to leave until the money spent on their journey was reimbursed.
Upon receiving the complaint, the KSU Delhi Unit immediately informed the Delhi Police, who acted swiftly and located the woman accused in the matter. She was subsequently detained for questioning.
During the inquiry, the woman denied all allegations. She reportedly stated that the two women had voluntarily travelled to Delhi in search of employment and that she had only assisted them by covering their travel expenses. She also denied any involvement in forcing or attempting to force them into prostitution.
Following police intervention, the accused woman was directed to return the victims’ mobile phones. The two women were then safely handed over to the care and protection of the KSU Delhi Unit.
The KSU informed that arrangements have already been made for the safe return of both women to Meghalaya. Family members of one of the victims have reportedly sent the necessary funds for her airfare, and she is expected to return home shortly.
Reaffirming its commitment to protecting students and youth from Meghalaya residing outside the state, the KSU Delhi Unit urged job seekers to exercise caution while accepting employment offers from unknown individuals and to verify the authenticity of such opportunities before travelling.
