SHILLONG : The Meghalaya Pradesh Mahila Congress Committee (MPMCC) on Thursday lodged an FIR at Sadar Police Station against a YouTube channel, alleging that it had made defamatory and derogatory remarks against Meghalaya Pradesh Congress Committee (MPCC) president and former MP Vincent H Pala.
Addressing reporters, MPMCC president Joplin Shylla said the complaint was filed against Ronnie Rani, who operates the YouTube channel Ka Jingshisha.
According to Shylla, the channel published a video containing remarks that allegedly defamed Pala by referring to him using offensive terms and making what she described as baseless allegations.
“We have come to file an FIR because the remarks made against our president and former MP Vincent H Pala are defamatory and unacceptable,” she said.
Expressing concern over the content of the video, Shylla stated that members of the Mahila Congress were deeply hurt after watching it. She alleged that the criticism was not limited to Pala but also targeted other present and former Congress leaders.
She further said that the language used in the video was inappropriate and did not reflect the standards of public discourse. According to her, if an individual has personal grievances, they should be addressed through appropriate channels rather than through public attacks on social media platforms.
Shylla said that while party members may not know Ronnie Rani personally, they are aware of his online platform and decided to take legal action after viewing the video.
Meanwhile, Congress legal counsel Kynpham Kharlyngdoh said the timing of the video was a matter of concern, particularly with election-related political activities underway.
He informed that the complaint pertains to a video titled “Statement against Congress candidate Vincent H Pala byelection 26.”
Kharlyngdoh said the party has requested police authorities to investigate the matter and ensure that the law takes its course. He also confirmed that Congress representatives met East Khasi Hills Superintendent of Police Vivek Syiem and sought his intervention.
According to Kharlyngdoh, the video also contained allegations against other Congress leaders, including Dr Mukul Sangma and Sanjay Das, besides targeting Pala and the party as a whole.
Police are yet to issue an official statement regarding the complaint.
