Shillong : Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma on Monday said the state government will take legal action against those responsible for violating prohibitory orders in connection with the tragic Lapalang incident that claimed the lives of five workers.
Speaking to reporters, the Chief Minister said that those who ignored the restrictions and acted in violation of the law would face appropriate action.
“The individuals who are not following those prohibitions are breaking the law. Appropriate action will be taken against them,” Sangma said.
The Chief Minister also acknowledged the difficult financial circumstances of the victims’ families, noting that they belong to economically weaker sections of society. While there is currently no provision under existing disaster management rules to provide compensation in such cases, he said the government is exploring ways to extend assistance.
“Because they are from poor backgrounds, I will examine the matter and I will take a decision,” he stated.
Sangma further revealed that he has received representations from various National People’s Party (NPP) units, including the Nongthymmai unit, requesting the government to provide support to the bereaved families.
“I am examining and seeing how we can give some support,” the Chief Minister said, indicating that a decision on financial assistance may be taken after reviewing the available options.
The Lapalang tragedy, which resulted in the deaths of five workers, has sparked widespread concern across Meghalaya, with calls growing for accountability and support for the affected families. The state government is expected to initiate legal action against those found responsible while simultaneously considering relief measures for the victims’ next of kin.
