SHILLONG : Meghalaya Police have registered an FIR against a local lawyer after a law intern accused him of sexually harassing her inside his office at Keating Road in Shillong.
Confirming the development, SP (City) Dangsan Khyriem said the written complaint was received on July 28 and a case has been registered at Sadar Police Station under Sections 74 and 75 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS).
According to the complaint, the law intern alleged that while she and another intern were sitting in the advocate’s office, the lawyer called her into his chamber and allegedly attempted to sexually harass her.
The complainant stated that she resisted the alleged act and pushed the accused away.
She further alleged that the lawyer then asked her to enter another room, where he again allegedly attempted to sexually harass her.
According to police, the intern raised an alarm and informed her friends about the incident.
The complaint also alleges that the lawyer later offered her money and asked her to meet him again on Saturday.
Following the incident, the complainant left the office in a distressed condition before approaching the police and submitting a written complaint.
Based on the complaint, Sadar Police registered Sadar PS Case No. 265 under Sections 74 and 75 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita.
SP Dangsan Khyriem said the investigation is currently underway, with police recording statements and collecting evidence.
He added that further legal action will be taken based on the findings of the investigation.
Police have not announced any arrest so far, and the allegations remain under investigation.
