SHILLONG : The Hynniewtrep Youth Council (HYC) has sought registration of an FIR against two Assam-based social media users over an alleged Facebook Live containing derogatory and offensive remarks against the Khasi-Jaintia community.
HYC Education Secretary Enlang Sawian submitted a complaint to the East Khasi Hills Superintendent of Police, seeking police action against Facebook user “Moskan Uddin” from Hojai and content creator “Mumu Mumu” from Golaghat, Assam.
According to the complaint, the two individuals allegedly made several derogatory statements targeting Khasi-Jaintia people during a viral Facebook Live.
Alleged remarks against Khasi-Jaintia women
The complaint alleges that the duo referred to Khasi-Jaintia women as “prostitute women” and made degrading remarks about their character and the paternity of their children.
They also allegedly referred to Khasis as “wild creatures” and made remarks claiming that Khasi men have “no future.”
The HYC has described the alleged statements as highly offensive and insulting to the dignity of the Khasi-Jaintia community.
Alleged threats and inflammatory claims
The complaint further alleges that the individuals threatened to take action against people from Meghalaya on behalf of Assam.
It also stated that the duo allegedly claimed that murders of non-tribals take place every year in Meghalaya.
The HYC has urged the police to investigate the Facebook Live and take appropriate legal action against those responsible for the alleged statements.
HYC seeks action under BNS
In its complaint, the organisation sought registration of an FIR under relevant provisions of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) dealing with alleged promotion of enmity, defamation and criminal intimidation.
The complaint comes amid heightened sensitivity over statements and social media content concerning communities in Meghalaya and neighbouring Assam.
The HYC has urged the East Khasi Hills police to examine the alleged video and initiate proceedings in accordance with law.
The allegations mentioned in the complaint are subject to police investigation, and no guilt has been established against the individuals named.
