SHILLONG : The tourist taxi dispute between Meghalaya and Assam has been resolved following a joint meeting between taxi associations from both states in Shillong on Tuesday.
The meeting was attended by seven taxi associations from Assam and five from Meghalaya and was initially chaired by the Transport Commissioners of both states. It was later jointly chaired by Meghalaya Deputy Chief Minister in-charge of Transport Sniawbhalang Dhar and Assam Minister Atul Bora.
Assam agrees to parking facilities for Meghalaya taxis
Dhar said Assam has agreed to provide designated parking space and toilet facilities at the airport for Meghalaya tourist taxis.
He also said both states would ensure better police coordination to prevent harassment of taxi drivers operating between the two states.
“Both associations have committed to work together. Remaining issues will be resolved within a few days,” Dhar said.
He added that a sub-committee headed by the Transport Commissioners of both states will meet whenever required to address any remaining issues.
Assam says situation has returned to normal
Assam Minister Atul Bora said the dispute, which arose following the August 19 incident in Shillong, was resolved after a meeting held in Guwahati on August 22.
He said protesters subsequently withdrew their agitation following the meeting.
“We are implementing the resolutions adopted on August 23. Now the situation is normal,” Bora said.
The latest meeting is expected to further strengthen coordination between tourist taxi operators from Meghalaya and Assam and help prevent similar disputes in the future.
