RI-BHOI : The University of Science & Technology Meghalaya (USTM) observed the 100th birth anniversary of Bharat Ratna Dr Bhupen Hazarika with a soulful tribute programme at the university’s Central Auditorium on Tuesday.
The programme celebrated the enduring legacy of the legendary singer, composer, filmmaker, lyricist and cultural icon, whose works continue to inspire generations across India, particularly in Assam and the Northeast.
The commemorative programme began with a melodious welcome song performed by USTM faculty members.
Students present special Bhupen Hazarika tribute
Students of USTM, through the university’s Cultural Forum, presented a special Sudhakantha Bhupen Hazarika Tribute Performance, bringing alive some of the maestro’s timeless musical creations.
The performance reflected the deep emotional and cultural connection that Hazarika’s music continues to share with the people of Assam and the wider Northeast.
Addressing the gathering, Mayur Bora, Author-in-Residence at USTM, spoke about the life, works and immense cultural contribution of Dr Bhupen Hazarika.
He highlighted Hazarika’s songs on themes including the dignity of labour, while emphasising the continuing relevance of his creative legacy and his contribution to taking the voice and culture of the Northeast to a wider national and global audience.
Musical and dance tributes
The programme also featured a musical tribute by eminent musician Kamal Kataki, who paid homage to the legendary artiste through his performance.
USTM students further presented a dance tribute, adding another dimension to the celebration of Hazarika’s artistic legacy.
The programme concluded with the USTM family coming together for a tribute through “Manuhe Manuhor Babe”, remembering one of Assam and India’s most celebrated cultural personalities.
