SHILLONG: On September 10, 2026, farmers under the banner of the Hill Farmers Union, led by its president, Bah Commandar Shangpliang, along with Bah Alfond Kharsyntiew, organised a peaceful rally in Shillong.
The rally began near the statue of Woh Kiang Nongbah, close to Civil Hospital Shillong, and proceeded through Barik Point before concluding at Madan Malki.
During the rally, the farmers walked alongside their cattle as a symbolic way of drawing the government’s attention to their various demands.
Among their key demands were the waiver of agricultural loans, payment of compensation for losses of crops, cattle and agricultural produce, and measures to prevent the entry of cattle from outside the state.
The farmers said their demands were aimed at addressing the difficulties faced by the farming community and protecting the interests and livelihoods of farmers in Meghalaya.
