SHILLONG : National People’s Party (NPP) national president and Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma on Tuesday declined to comment on speculation about a possible merger between the BJP and the United Democratic Party (UDP), saying he has not received any concrete information from a reliable source.
Asked about reports of a possible merger, Sangma said the matter concerned the BJP and the UDP and that he had only come across social media posts, reels and media reports.
He said there was nothing concrete before him that would allow him to make a comment on the issue.
Sangma said he would refrain from commenting until facts emerge, stressing that political statements should be based on verified information rather than speculation circulating on social media.
“Until I see something concrete, I will refrain from making any comment,” he said, adding that he could not make a guess or take a position based only on news reports, messages or reels.
Meanwhile, Sangma strongly asserted that the NPP remains united, saying the party currently has 33 MLAs working together.
“The NPP is absolutely united,” he said, referring to the Deputy Chief Minister’s earlier statement on behalf of the party.
Sangma said the NPP was working not only to strengthen the present government but also to expand the party ahead of the upcoming elections.
He specifically referred to the Shillong Lok Sabha by-election and the upcoming Autonomous District Council elections in Garo Hills, saying the party was working towards winning both.
