SHILLONG : Traffic Additional Superintendent of Police (Addl SP) Lovish Garg was seriously injured after a scooty carrying two youths allegedly rammed into him while attempting to evade naka checking at Urkaliar in Shillong early Friday.
The incident took place at around 1:30 am near Samkhamti Petrol Pump, City SP Dangsan Khyriem said.
According to the police, the scooty riders allegedly ignored signals to stop during the naka checking and accelerated away. Garg then intervened in an attempt to stop them, following which the scooty allegedly hit him.
“Instead of stopping, the scooty accelerated and hit the Additional Superintendent of Police, causing him serious injuries,” Khyriem said, adding that the incident appeared to be deliberate.
Garg was rushed to Woodland Hospital following the incident and was later shifted to the HD Unit for further treatment.
Police are registering an attempt to murder case in connection with the incident. The two accused are suspected to be linked to the Khasi Students’ Union (KSU), while police are investigating their motive and the circumstances surrounding their alleged attempt to flee from the naka.
Khyriem warned that naka checking and security operations would continue and said that attempts to evade police checking would invite strict action.
