RI-BHOI : The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) Ri-Bhoi District has raised concerns over frequent power disruptions in the district and the increase in electricity bills despite consumers allegedly receiving inadequate power supply.
The party submitted a written complaint to the Superintending Engineer of the Meghalaya Power Generation Corporation Limited (MePGCL) at Umiam and the Deputy Commissioner of Ri-Bhoi District, urging the authorities to take immediate action to address the issue.
The BJP said frequent power outages have been affecting daily activities across Ri-Bhoi, including students preparing for examinations, students and other residents who depend on electricity for their studies, businesses and other essential activities.
Speaking to the media, BJP Ri-Bhoi District president Sen Thabah and BJP Umroi Mandal president Bandari Ryntathiang, in the presence of Umsning Mandal president Teibor Nongshli, Jirang Mandal president Albertus Lapang and other party leaders, said they had received complaints from several residents regarding repeated power disruptions.
According to the BJP leaders, the party was particularly concerned about what they described as rising electricity bills despite consumers allegedly being unable to use electricity regularly because of frequent outages.
They said the situation was affecting students, youths, entrepreneurs and others whose work and daily activities depend on a reliable electricity supply.
The BJP leaders also questioned the situation in which electricity is generated in Ri-Bhoi while, according to them, residents of the district continue to face difficulties related to power supply.
They urged the concerned authorities and departments to take immediate steps to improve the electricity supply and address complaints regarding electricity bills.
The party further warned that if no action is taken, it may organise a public rally carrying placards to press the authorities to address the electricity-related problems faced by people across Ri-Bhoi.
