KHLIEHRIAT, OCT 13: The Central Executive Committee (CEC) of the Jaiñtia National Council (JNC) conducted a surprise inspection of trading licences and service licences in Khliehriat West, the headquarters of East Jaiñtia Hills district, in coordination with officials of the Jaiñtia Hills Autonomous District Council (JHADC).
The inspection was carried out in accordance with the JHADC Trading by Non-Tribal Rules, 2015, to verify whether businesses operating in the area possessed valid licences and the necessary documents.
Speaking to the media, JNC CEC General Secretary Wanshwa Suting said the inspection followed concerns over the growing number of people from outside the region operating shops and commercial establishments in East Jaiñtia Hills.
He said the primary objective was to check whether those running businesses had obtained the required trading licences and maintained the necessary documentation.
“The absence of such licences and documents is one of the major reasons behind revenue losses suffered by the JHADC,” Suting said.
He further stated that such practices not only affect the Council’s revenue but also create difficulties for indigenous residents, particularly by increasing competition for employment and business opportunities that local people could otherwise pursue.
Suting added that establishments possessing valid trading licences but lacking other required documents had been given one week to complete the necessary formalities.
He warned that businesses failing to comply within the stipulated period could face strict action from the organisation.
The JNC said the inspection was aimed at ensuring compliance with the applicable rules and addressing concerns over business operations in the district.
