SHILLONG : Leader of Opposition in the Lok Sabha Adhir Ranjan Chowdhury on Wednesday asserted that the Congress would work to regain its lost political ground across the Northeast, including Meghalaya, while challenging communal polarisation and alleged political poaching by ruling parties.
Speaking after a meeting with Congress leaders and party workers in Shillong, Chowdhury expressed confidence in the party’s revival, pointing to the enthusiasm among workers as a sign of renewed energy within the organisation.
He acknowledged that the Congress had lost ground in several parts of the Northeast, including Meghalaya, alleging that the ruling dispensation had weakened the party through political poaching.
“The North East is such a place where we shall be striving hard to restore our lost ground. Like other states, in Meghalaya also we have been subjected to political poaching by the ruling dispensation,” he said.
Chowdhury also accused regional parties across the Northeast of aligning with the BJP to retain political power, alleging that communal polarisation and narrow political interests had contributed to the Congress’s difficulties in the region.
He claimed that these alliances had intensified efforts to weaken the Congress and undermine its political position.
Despite these challenges, the Congress leader maintained that the party was gradually rejuvenating, citing the participation and enthusiasm of workers during the Shillong meeting.
He said the discussions with party leaders and workers focused on strategies to strengthen the organisation and rebuild its political presence across the region.
Expressing confidence in the party’s future, Chowdhury declared that the Congress would make every effort to reclaim the areas where it had lost influence.
“Certainly, each and every inch of NE region which we have lost will be restored by whatever means. Today, tomorrow, the North East will again be back in the fold of the Congress party,” he said.
