SHILLONG, JAN 10:
Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma on Saturday assured strict action against all those involved in the violent incident at Goalgoan under Rajabala Police Station in West Garo Hills district, which claimed the life of an ACHIK member.
The incident occurred on Friday around 2 pm when ACHIK member Dilseng M. Sangma was allegedly assaulted by unidentified persons at Goalgoan. He was rushed to Bhaitbari Community Health Centre and later referred to Tura Civil Hospital, but succumbed to his injuries while being shifted for further treatment.
In a video statement, the Chief Minister said the incident resulted in the death of one youth, while another person sustained serious injuries. Condemning the incident, Sangma expressed condolences to the bereaved family.
The Chief Minister informed that West Garo Hills police acted swiftly, conducting multiple raids across different locations late Friday night. So far, three persons have been arrested, and efforts are ongoing to trace and apprehend others involved in the crime.
To maintain peace and communal harmony, the Deputy Commissioner has convened a meeting with civil society organizations to form a peace committee and discuss the situation in detail.
Urging citizens to remain calm, Sangma appealed to the public to avoid believing or sharing unverified information on social media. He assured that the police and district administration are actively working to ensure that all perpetrators are brought to justice.
Meanwhile, the district police chief stated that raids were also conducted at the residence of a quarry owner suspected to be linked to the incident. The quarry owner is currently absconding, and police teams are continuing efforts to locate and arrest him at the earliest.
