SHILLONG, JAN 20: Renowned Christian leader and evangelist Rev Dr R. R. Cunville was laid to rest at the Laitumkhrah Presbyterian Church Cemetery in Lawjynriew, Shillong, amid a large gathering of believers, church leaders and dignitaries from across India and abroad.
The funeral proceedings began with a prayer service at his residence in Upper Lachumiere, followed by a special funeral service held at the Laitumkhrah Presbyterian Church. The service was led by Rev T. Khong Pde, Moderator of the Khasi Jaintia Presbyterian (KJP) Synod.
Several eminent church leaders paid rich tributes to the late evangelist, including Dr Elaine Duncan, President of the United Bible Societies, and Roy Graham, President of the Presbyterian Church of India, who remembered Rev Dr Cunville for his lifelong dedication to faith, service and evangelism.
The solemn ceremony was marked by emotional moments as the Laitumkhrah Presbyterian Church Choir rendered special hymns, along with a tribute song by Rev Terence Wanshong, in honour of the departed leader.
Rev Dr Cunville, who passed away on January 17, 2026, at the age of 86, was widely respected in the Christian community for his humility, unwavering faith and tireless commitment to spreading the Gospel.
He was closely associated with the Billy Graham Evangelistic Association and served as President of the United Bible Societies from 2010 to 2016, playing a key role in promoting Bible translation and distribution worldwide.
His passing marks the end of an era in Christian evangelism, with church leaders and followers remembering him as a servant leader whose life was devoted to faith, compassion and service to humanity.
