The Meghalaya Human Rights Commission (MHRC) has recommended payment of compensation to 15 individuals who were victims of alleged human rights violations during a police operation at Rimpu Bagan in West Garo Hills district on July 22, 2022.
Each of the affected persons has been recommended a compensation of ₹50,000, the Commission said.
According to the MHRC, a total of 30 cases were initially registered following complaints of human rights violations linked to the police action. However, 15 cases were later withdrawn by the complainants.
The Commission subsequently conducted a detailed enquiry into the remaining 15 cases and found sufficient evidence supporting the allegations of human rights violations.
“The enquiry was conducted by the Commission for the remaining fifteen cases and, after hearing evidence from both parties, the Commission passed the final order on January 29, 2026,” the MHRC Secretary said in a statement issued on Friday.
The final order has been addressed to the Principal Secretary to the Government of Meghalaya, Home (Police) Department, recommending payment of compensation to the complainants.
The recommendation has been made under Section 18(e) of the Protection of Human Rights Act, 1993, the statement added.
