Shillong : The Shillong-Dawki road has been closed indefinitely to all vehicular movement after a major landslide caused a complete road cut-off near Laitlyngkot village in East Khasi Hills district.
According to an official order issued by East Khasi Hills Deputy Commissioner Abhilash Baranwal, the landslide occurred along the Shillong-Dawki highway at Chainage 25+200, ahead of the main Laitlyngkot village, making the stretch unsafe for traffic.
The National Highways & Infrastructure Development Corporation Ltd (NHIDCL), after assessing the damage, informed the district administration that restoration and repair work would take several days. In view of public safety, authorities have ordered the immediate closure of the road until further notice.
Commuters, including tourists travelling to Dawki, have been advised to avoid the affected stretch and use alternate routes via Shillong–Sohra–Sohbar–Dawki or Shillong–Jowai–Amlarem–Dawki.
The administration has urged motorists to follow traffic diversion instructions issued by Police, Traffic personnel and NHIDCL officials on the ground. Travellers have also been advised to plan their journeys carefully as additional travel time may be required.
With monsoon conditions continuing across Meghalaya, residents and visitors have been asked to stay updated with weather alerts issued by the India Meteorological Department (IMD). In case of emergencies, people can contact the emergency helpline number 112.
The district administration expressed regret for the inconvenience caused and assured that restoration efforts are being undertaken on a priority basis.
