SHILLONG : Meghalaya police seized 30,000 explosive detonators from a vehicle during a naka checking operation at Umkiang village in East Jaintia Hills and arrested two persons from Assam in connection with the illegal transportation of explosives.
According to East Jaintia Hills Superintendent of Police Pankaj Kumar Rasgania, the seizure took place in the early hours of May 13 at around 2:30 am during routine checking by the naka party of Umkiang Police Patrol Post.
Police intercepted a suspicious white Hyundai Eon bearing registration number AS-10-A-5916 travelling towards Silchar at 2 Kilo area under Umkiang village.
β€œOn 13th May 2026, at approximately 02:30 AM, the naka party of Umkiang PPP intercepted a suspicious white Hyundai Eon going towards Silchar,” the SP said.
During a detailed search of the vehicle, police recovered 30,000 explosive detonators hidden inside two carton boxes and one gunny bag.
Police said the detonators were being transported illegally and immediately arrested the two occupants of the vehicle.
The arrested persons have been identified as Kamrul Ali Laskar, a resident of Jamalpur in Cachar district of Assam, and Ibrahim Uddin Laskar, a resident of Loknathpur in Cachar district.
Following the seizure, police registered a criminal case at Lumshnong Police Station under relevant sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) and the Explosive Substances Act.
Police said investigation is currently underway to trace both the source and intended destination of the explosives and to identify any larger network involved in the illegal transportation.
