SHILLONG : BJP Mahila Morcha state president Arena Hynniewta on Wednesday described the Centre’s decision to implement a 33 percent reservation for women in governance as a historic move that will transform society and strengthen leadership across Meghalaya.
Speaking after a public rally held at Nongpoh, attended by young women and mothers from Ri-Bhoi district, Hynniewta said the initiative aims to spread awareness about the recognition and opportunities being extended to women at every level of society.
She highlighted that the decision under the Nari Shakti Vandan Adhiniyam will ensure greater representation of women in key decision-making roles, including Members of Parliament (MP), Members of Legislative Assembly (MLA), and Members of District Council (MDC).
According to Hynniewta, this step will not only empower women but also promote unity and collective responsibility in bringing meaningful social change.
She further stressed that increased participation of women in leadership roles will positively impact the younger generation, especially in addressing challenges related to education, employment, and opportunities.
“When women are empowered with authority, they are better positioned to guide and protect the youth, ensuring a more progressive and inclusive society,” she stated.
Expressing gratitude to the Union Government, Hynniewta said the law reflects a strong commitment towards women’s empowerment and inclusive governance. She also thanked Prime Minister Narendra Modi for his vision and leadership in introducing the legislation.
Highlighting the changing role of women in society, she added that women are no longer confined to traditional roles but are now stepping forward as active leaders and responsible citizens shaping the future of the nation.
