SHILLONG : East Khasi Hills Police have arrested the president of the Khasi Students’ Union (KSU) Nongmensong unit in connection with the recent assault case, taking the total number of arrests to four.
The arrested person has been identified as Jeremaiah Pohtmi, who also serves as the Assistant Organising Secretary of the Khasi Students’ Union.
East Khasi Hills Superintendent of Police Vivek Syiem confirmed the fourth arrest on Monday.
“Following the three arrests made earlier, this morning we have arrested the assistant organising secretary of KSU who is also the president of KSU Nongmensong. So tally of arrests till today is four people. We are asking for custody,” Syiem said.
The police have also constituted a Special Investigation Team (SIT) to investigate the case.
Syiem said the investigation is currently underway and the SIT is being monitored by the Inspector General of Police (IGP), Law and Order.
“Investigation is in progress. SIT has been formed, it is being monitored by IG Law and Order and a lot of steps are being taken to ensure we identify and arrest the accused and chargesheet the case at the earliest,” he said.
The latest arrest comes as police continue their investigation into the assault case, with authorities stating that further action will be taken based on the findings of the SIT.
