Deputy Chief Minister and four-time MLA from Nartiang, Sniawbhalang Dhar, on Thursday said he has no objection to any leader contesting from the Nartiang constituency in the 2028 Assembly elections, including Voice of the People Party (VPP) president and Nongkrem MLA Ardent M Basaiawmoit.
Speaking to reporters, Dhar said the constituency is open to all political parties and candidates.
“Anybody is welcome. There is no problem at all. Anyone, even from outside the constituency, can contest. Congress, VPP, BJP, UDP — everyone is welcome. Where is the problem?” Dhar said.
Responding to speculation about Ardent Basaiawmoit possibly contesting from Nartiang, the Deputy Chief Minister remarked that such a move could have political consequences for the Nongkrem legislator.
“If he comes to contest here, I fear that Nongkrem may not accept him back anymore. You never know,” Dhar said.
Emphasising his focus on governance rather than political speculation, Dhar said his priority remains serving the people of Nartiang.
“I just have to work hard,” he stated.
Highlighting development works in the constituency, Dhar said visible progress speaks for itself.
“I don’t need to explain the development happening in my constituency. Everyone can see it. I am not saying I have fulfilled everything, but I am trying my best as a local MLA,” he added.
Expressing strong confidence in the electorate, Dhar pointed out that Nartiang voters have elected him for four consecutive terms.
“The people of Nartiang have elected the same MLA four times. They are not fools to take such decisions. They are not like Nongkrem voters who change their MLA every five years,” he said.
