Shillong: Football fever is set to grip Meghalaya as the fifth edition of the Meghalaya State League (MSL 5) kicks off on April 11, promising to be the biggest tournament in the competition’s history.
A total of 33 teams from across the state are expected to participate in this year’s edition, divided into eight groups for the initial stage. However, officials have clarified that the number remains provisional as all teams must complete pre-tournament formalities before being confirmed.
The Meghalaya State League was conceptualised by the Meghalaya Football Association and has received consistent support from the Directorate of Sports and Youth Affairs, Government of Meghalaya, since its inception in 2017. The tournament brings together top clubs from affiliated district associations to compete for the title of Champions of Meghalaya.
This year’s edition holds special significance as it is being organised as part of the association’s year-long Golden Jubilee celebrations.
Defending champions Mawlai SC, who clinched the title in 2024, will compete in Group C alongside Amlarem SC, Lamin XI SCC and Laskein SCCC. Matches for this group will be played in Amlarem.
The opening match of the tournament will take place at the SSA Stadium in Shillong under Group A, featuring Nongkseh SSCC, Mawshun SCC, Khimusniang SC and Umkaber SCC.
Shillong will also host Group B matches at the MFA Turf, where teams including Nangkiew Irat SC, Mulang SC Nongbah, Mawlum Tyrsad SCC and Mawphu SC will compete.
Group D, featuring strong contenders like Ladthadlaboh SC and Rymbai Shkenshynriah SC, will be held in Khliehriat, while Group E matches will take place in Wahiajer. This group includes former champions Shillong Lajong FC along with Lumphyrnai Lumsohphoh FC, Iatyllilang Lumsehkot SCC and Lamyrsiang SCC.
Mairang will host Group F matches, while Group G — the largest group with five teams — will be played in Williamnagar, featuring clubs from across the Garo Hills region.
Group H matches will be held in Mawkyrwat and include 2023 champions Rangdajied United FC, along with Mawten SC, Mawlarshong SC and Umdang SC.
Over the past four editions, the Meghalaya State League has significantly raised the standard of football across the state. With increased participation, competitive spirit, and the lure of prize money and prestige, MSL 5 is expected to deliver high-quality football action.
As anticipation builds, fans across Meghalaya are eagerly waiting to see which team will rise to the occasion and be crowned the next Champions of Meghalaya.
