SHILLONG : The Green Tech Foundation (GTF) has announced that its indefinite hunger strike will continue after the Meghalaya Tourism Department refused to revoke the agreement including Lumpongdeng Island in the proposed Taj Resort & Spa project.
GTF chairman H Bansiewdor Nonglang, who is currently on the seventh day of the hunger strike, has reportedly grown weak as the protest continues.
The decision to intensify the agitation came after a meeting with Director of Tourism BL Pakyntein, which failed to provide any assurance on scrapping the project.
GTF secretary general Ritre Lyngdoh said the meeting was called at short notice without any prior written assurance from the department. Despite this, the organisation decided to attend the discussion.
However, the outcome proved disappointing, as the Tourism Department remained firm on retaining Lumpongdeng Island as part of the luxury resort project.
“We have been sitting for more than six days hoping for a positive response from the government. But even after detailed discussions, especially on environmental concerns, the department is adamant and has refused to revoke the agreement,” Lyngdoh said.
Following the meeting, GTF declared that the protest would not only continue but also intensify in the coming days.
“The indefinite hunger strike will carry on, and our democratic protest as guaranteed by the Constitution of India will be amplified,” he added.
The controversy surrounding the Lumpongdeng Island project has sparked growing concerns over environmental impact and public interest, with pressure mounting on the government to reconsider its decision.
