SHILLONG : BJP leader and Pynthorumkhrah MLA AL Hek on Thursday said he has initiated discussions with central BJP leaders to explore funding opportunities under key schemes for the development of religious and cultural sites in Meghalaya.
According to Hek, schemes such as Swadesh Darshan Scheme and PRASAD Scheme could be utilised to boost infrastructure and tourism at important heritage locations across the state.
“I had discussions with central leaders, and they informed me about schemes like Swadesh Darshan and PRASAD which can help develop religious sites,” Hek said.
He informed that several key locations have already been identified after consultations with state leaders. These include the Seng Khasi Kmie, the Behdienkhlam in Jaintia Hills, and sites associated with the Niamtre community.
Hek also revealed that proposals have been suggested for promoting cultural tourism, including the development of cultural centres under the Khyriem Syiemship for events such as the Shad Nongkrem.
Highlighting the importance of historical churches, Hek said he has proposed the development of the Presbyterian Church Nongsawlia, believed to be one of the earliest Christian churches in Meghalaya and possibly the Northeast region.
On the development of the Mawjymbuin Cave, Hek clarified that the final decision rests with the local Dorbar Shnong.
“It is not a BJP scheme or a government scheme directly. It belongs to the village, and we will assist by forwarding proposals to the Government of India,” he stated.
Hek emphasized that the role of the party would be to facilitate proposals and ensure that local stakeholders benefit from central government initiatives aimed at boosting tourism and preserving cultural heritage.
